Global Water Intelligence is working with the 2030 Water Resources Group on the Scaling Reuse Initiative. The objective of this initiative is to develop a global target for water reuse. This would become the focus of global action on water security as net zero is for carbon.
The medium-term objective is to get this target adopted as a non-binding global “ambition” at the UN Water Summit in Abu Dhabi in 2026. The hope is that this will help drive regulatory reform, policy action and technological innovation needed for a water secure world.
The 2030 Water Resources Group is developing the framework for how the target might be adopted in the municipal sphere. GWI’s role is to develop the framework for industry. This involves:
1. Defining what water reuse means in the context of each industrial sector
2. Making the economic case for water reuse to show the extent to which it creates shareholder value
3. Outlining the options for an achievable ambition for water reuse which is both attractive to investors and makes a significant contribution to global water security
Creating this framework is a key objective of the Scaling Water Reuse in Industry Workshop on the pre-conference day of the Global Water Summit.
