Biography
George Kazantzis is Chief Water Officer at the Water Development Department (WDD) of Cyprus since June 2024. WDD is the bulk supplier of drinking and irrigation water and custodian of all water sources in Cyprus, owning and/or operating 110 dams, 5 Water Treatment Plants, 9 Sea Water Desalination Plants, hundreds of pumping stations and boreholes and overviewing all wastewater treatment operations in the Republic of Cyprus.
The Water Development Department is responsible for the protection and sustainable development as well as the rational management of the water resources of Cyprus, in accordance with European and National legislation and within the framework of the Government water policy in force from time to time.
From 2008 to 2024 George Kazantzis worked as a Senior Consultant and Project Manager on International Water Projects, providing upgraded drinking water and safe wastewater disposal solutions to cities in Asia and Europe, ranging from metropolises such as Dhaka and Ho Chi Minh City to small regional towns. These projects with an estimated total implementation cost >4 billion EUR have the potential to improve the quality of life of an estimated 70 million people, in 15 countries and have been funded by a variety of international donors and banks such as WB, ADB, EU, EBRD, AIIB, CEB, EIB, DSIF, MCC etc. From 1999 to 2008 George Kazantzis worked as a Design Manager and Consultant on Water Projects in Greece.
